Will Smith Shares How ‘Collateral Beauty’ Helped Him Cope With Losing His Father

Will Smith is back at it again with a film that is touching the hearts of many. The I Am Legend actor takes on the role of a man who questions love, time, and death in the film, Collateral Beauty. After receiving surprising answers throughout the reel, he learns how to deal with loss, the true meaning of beauty, and life after a tragic moment.

The 48-year-old actor said the film helped him cope with the loss of his father, Willard Carroll Smith Sr., who passed away on Nov. 7. Smith expressed that he received the script when his father fell ill. “I’m doing all of this research about a guy who experiences death at the time my father was given six weeks [to live],” he said during an interview on Ellen.

Smith explained that he gained knowledge and different perspectives while preparing for the role, and learned about Christianity, Judaism and Buddhism. Smith added that the performance and ideas in the movie were “so deeply personal.”

Collateral Beauty releases in theaters on Dec. 16. The film was also directed by David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada). Alongside Smith, other co-stars include Kate Winslet, Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren, Edward Norton, and Naomie Harris.
