Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones is perhaps the best artist/producer duo in pop history. But Jones memories of the deceased pop star wasn’t always pleasant. Today, (Feb. 7) Vulture released a candid interview with Jones in which he discussed The Beatles and Jackson. Although the two legendary artists storied partnership appeared harmonious, Jones released information about Jackson that may give a glimpse to what Jones really thought about him.
I hate to get into this publicly, but Michael stole a lot of stuff. He stole a lot of songs. [Donna Summer’s] “State of Independence” and “Billie Jean.” The notes don’t lie, man. He was as Machiavellian as they come.
Jones also stated that Jackson could get stingy with writing credits. Per Jones, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes wrote the c section for Jackson’s hit “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.” Jackson is listed as the sole writer for the track. But Jackson was unwilling to share writing credits with Phillinganes.
Greedy, man. Greedy. “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” — Greg Phillinganes wrote the c section. Michael should’ve given him 10 percent of the song. Wouldn’t do it.
It’s interesting that Jones is stating this about Jackson since he’s been deceased for nearly nine years. But Jones comments of late should make his comments on Jackson no surprise. He was critical of Taylor Swift’s songwriting in an interview with GQ magazine and he also stated he had 22 girlfriends. So in 2018, Jones isn’t new to outlandish statements. But his comments on Jackson may strike a nerve with Jackson’s fanbase.
