It’s an understatement to say that there was no love lost between Ice Cube and his one-time manager, Jerry Heller. If Cube’s vicious 1991 diss track “No Vaseline” and the chronicling of the rapper’s ugly break from N.W.A in 1989 in Straight Outta Compton aren’t proof enough, check out what Cube said over the weekend when asked about Heller’s death on Friday at age 75.
“I didn’t have no emotions. I’m just glad I’m here with my brothers today… I ain’t gonna pop no champagne, but I ain’t gonna shed no tears either,” Cube told Detroit’s Hot 107.5 in an interview on Saturday to promote a show that night featuring former N.W.A members DJ Yella and MC Ren, among others. “It is what it is, you know. We come here to pass and he’s outta here, so you know. Like I said, I’m not losing no sleep over that one.”
Eazy’s daughter, E.B. Wright, told TMZ that despite the bad blood between Heller and some former N.W.A members, she supported her late father’s mentor/business partner. I’m still depressed about it,” Wright told the gossip site. “I stand behind Jerry Heller to the fullest. He was like a second father to my dad, so I’m gonna call him like another grandfather to me. I’m very sad about his passing and just hoping to continue my father’s legacy and Jerry’s and get out the truth.”Heller is credited with helping late N.W.A member Eazy-E form Ruthless Records in 1987 and he managed the group early on, cementing a father-son-like relationship with Eazy, but rubbing some of the group’s other members the wrong way. Cube split after the band’s 1988 debut, Straight Outta Compton, over his claims that he wasn’t getting paid properly and iconic producer Dr. Dre left in 1991 over similar claims; neither sued and Heller was never found guilty of financial impropriety.
