There’s no doubt that T.I. is highly regarded as one of the biggest activists in hip hop. For the past several years, he has unabashedly helped anchor the Black Lives Matter movement through various interviews, records (like on his recent releases, “War Zone” and “We Will Not”), and protests. While many lauded his efforts, others criticized him for his views and takes, especially since he raps about violence in his music.
This week, he made a pit stop and visited Trevor Noah’s The Daily Show, where he addressed people’s thoughts on rappers attacking police through their lyrics, while at the same time, advocating for justice.
“People need to take into consideration that hip-hop traditionally has always been a reflection of the environment that artist had to endure before he made it to where he was,” said The Family Hustle star. “So if you want to change the content of the music, change the environment of the artist and he won’t have such negative things to say.”
Recently, T.I. expressed his support for NFL quarterback, Colin Kaepernick. Tip praised Kap for his decision to kneel during the National Anthem, because of the police’s excessive violence against African Americans.
“Listen, I respect the troops. I respect their efforts. However, I also acknowledge that black soldiers fought & died in WW2 to defend freedoms & liberties overseas that they couldn’t even receive for themselves when they made it back home as veterans. Me standing UP (or not standing) for mines shouldn’t be taken as an insult against yours……”, said T.I. on Instagram.
