The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington, D.C., will welcome its first visitor on September 24. In anticipation, the Museum will launch a one-day giving campaign on Tuesday, September 13. The NMAAHC Giving Day is a 24-hour online, social media-driven effort that will encourage donations from $10 to $25,000.

The Museum’s mission is to use African American history and culture as a lens into what it means to be an American. It is the only national museum exclusively devoted to the documentation of African American life, history and culture. Giving Day provides a way to increase awareness about the newest Smithsonian institution, as well as raise critical funds for its ongoing programs and operations. “The National Day of Giving provides everyone an opportunity to stand with us and be a part of history,” said Adrienne Brooks, Associate Director of Development, who headed up the national building fundraising effort.

Celebrities including Shonda Rhimes and Kerry Washington have signed on to be Giving Day Champions. Founding Donor Hyundai Motor America is the primary Giving Day sponsor. Hyundai will generously provide up to $500,000 for matching gifts made online.

“Hyundai is honored to support the National Museum of African American History and Culture as a Founding Donor,” said Dave Zuchowski, President and CEO, Hyundai Motor America. “The Smithsonian Institution is a preeminent organization in the world, which promotes better understanding and education of history and culture. The NMAAHC, the newest Smithsonian Museum, chronicles African American history and contributions to society for millions of visitors to see.  A core value at Hyundai is a commitment to diversity and inclusion.  We celebrate the rich tapestry of diversity, which we believe makes our society better. The NMAAHC’s mission and focus on African American history and culture will stand for many generations to come, to share the important American story that is profoundly shaped by the contributions of African Americans.”
