People are walking in a silent march in Washington, D.C., to remember the day Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated 50 years ago. The group will march from the MLK monument to the National Mall.
The civil rights icon was shot and killed at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968.
The King assassination was one of the most earth-shattering events of the time. The news was a catalyst for race riots in Washington, D.C., Chicago and dozens of other cities, causing damage that took decades to repair.
Memphis is marking the anniversary this week with a host of events. At 6:01 p.m. CT Wednesday — the time of King’s death — a historic church bell near the Lorraine Motel balcony where King was shot will toll 39 times.
